Description: | Prenolepis nitens is colloquially known as the “European honeypot ant”. Some workers develop into honey pots, but these are not comparable to the actual honey pot ants of the genus Myrmecocystus. The swollen gasters are here only fat deposits in the tissue, in addition, the workers still participate limited in the brood care.
Development: | Nuptial Flight: very early: from the end of March to the end of May (the sexes initially overwinter in the nest) Foundation: occurs claustrally (without feeding), possibly also by adoption or socially parasitic Colony size: up to 20,000 individuals |
|
Quantity: | a mated queen and workers (see selection); brood (varies according to season and development)
