This cork nest with pre-built tunnels and chambers is suitable for numerous ant species, especially those that nest in (dead) wood. It has two holes that serve as nest entrances.

Cork is a natural, chemically neutral material. Its structure is impermeable to liquids, does not react chemically, and therefore remains intact for a long time. However, permanently high moisture content can promote rot and shorten the life of the nest. In general, cork is very resistant to decay and fungal and mold infestation. Its special surface and structure offer little suitable breeding ground for fungi. Nevertheless, food residues, excrement, or other organic substances can promote mold growth.

We therefore recommend keeping ant species from drier regions in cork nests. However, species from more humid habitats can also be housed in them—for most, rot is not a problem. Many ant species found in Northern Europe, such as Camponotus herculeanus or Formica fusca, are even naturally adapted to rotten or partially decayed wood.
