Why two ant farms?
Harvester ants like Messor or Pogonomyrmex feed mainly on grains which they collect and store in their nest. For this purpose, these species need a nest with two different areas. One nest area must be kept slightly moist, as is the case with most ant species. This provides the perfect conditions for their brood to develop well. The second nest area, however, must remain completely dry. Here the ants can then store their collected grains so that they do not mold or begin to germinate.
What is the included nesting material?
Our starter set for harvester ants therefore contains not only one ant farm but two. Thus, two different areas can be created without any problems. The special nesting material included in the farms is called Digfix. In this, the animals can dig tunnels without soiling the windows and ant keepers have perfect insight into the nest at any time. In addition, Digfix can be used both dry and wet. The advantage over sand-loam in the dry state is that the chambers and tunnels cannot collapse. In the wet state, the inorganic material prevents mold growth and distributes moisture evenly.
The other contents of our starter sets, from the grain food to the red foils which give the animals an underground feeling, are all perfectly adapted to the keeping of harvester ants. The set is large enough for about 1-3 years depending on how quickly the colony kept in it develops. After that it can be easily expanded with more farms or arenas of our modular products.
