Ants for Experienced ant keepers
Many species of ants from colder regions need to hibernate. This varies depending on the origin of the species. Ants that hibernate in the wild should do the same in your home. If you do not give the animals their natural break then the colony growth can slow down or the queen can die very early.
Some ants hibernate for only three months while others need a period of four to five months (usually between November and March). Also the temperature that some species need for hibernation differs. For example, northern European species need temperatures between 5°C and 8°C, while southern European species need temperatures around 15°C. Northern European species stop activity completely during hibernation and southern European species are still slightly active.
