The balcony serves as an arena extension and makes it easier for the ants to climb up or down from the upper nest area of the arena. There is a narrow climbing aid for small ant species, such as Lasius niger, and a wider one for species such as Camponotus. The raised platform can be used as a feeding area for placing bowls or drinkers. It simplifies care and maintenance work, due to the proximity to the upper opening and keeps the bottom substrate free of food residues.
